Reka Vakhsh (English spelling)

Japanese: バフシ[川]（英語表記）Reka Vakhsh

It is a large tributary of the great Amu Darya river in Central Asia, and it straddles both Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The main stream is 524 km long, but if the upper tributaries are included, it is over 800 km long. Its drainage area is about 39,100 km2. It originates from a glacier (about 6,600 m above sea level) on the northern slope of the Za'alaisky Alatau mountain range in Kyrgyzstan, and is called the Kizilsu River. It flows west through the Alai valley into Tajikistan, where it changes name to the Sulfokh River. Both of these names mean "red water", and the name comes from the unusually large amount of solid matter (up to 4.16 kg/m3 downstream).

中央アジアの大河アム･ダリヤの大きな支流で，キルギス，タジキスタン両共和国にまたがる。本流の長さは524kmであるが，上流の支流を含めると800km以上になる。流域面積約3万9100km2。はじめキルギス共和国のザアライスキー･アラタウ(山脈)北斜面の氷河(標高約6600m)に発し，キジルスー川と呼ばれる。アライ河谷を西流してタジキスタン共和国に入ってスルホフ川と名を変えるが，いずれも〈赤い水〉の意で，その名称は異常に多量の固形物質(下流で4.16kg/m3に達する)が原因である。
