The foundation of the Medici family's prosperity was laid by Giovanni di Bicci de' Medici, who established a bank and developed it into a first-class bank by leveraging commercial transactions with the Papal Court. However, it was under the successor, Cosimo (C. de' Medici), that the Medici family took control of Florence. Cosimo opened many branches overseas, including in Avignon and London, and actively took advantage of the political situation to build up enormous wealth, and the Medici bank grew into one of the largest banks in Europe. ...
