Donghoi - Donghoi (English spelling)

A port city in central Vietnam. It is the capital of Quang Binh Province (population 794,000 in 1999). It is 155 km northwest of Hue and faces the South China Sea. Its population is 22,254 (1989). National Highway No. 1 and the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh railway line pass through the city. Its industries include fishing, shipbuilding, wood carving, and copperwork. Stretching for about 10 km from the west to the north of the city is a fort built by the Nguyen Dynasty in the 17th century as a defense against the north. Just to the south is the 17th parallel, which divides the city into north and south, so it was an important military base and was subjected to fierce bombing by the US military during the Vietnam War.
