Zebrina - Zeburina

Japanese: ゼブリナ - ぜぶりな

An evergreen perennial plant of the Commelinaceae family grown in greenhouses. Also known as Hakatakarakusa, it was introduced to Japan in the mid-Meiji period. It is easy to propagate by cuttings, grows well under greenhouse shelves, and grows quickly, making it popular as a summer hanging pot plant and has become widespread. The leaves are 6-8 cm long and oval, with a purple-brown upper surface with two thick silvery-white stripes and a deep purple-red underside. It grows well in the shade but can also tolerate strong light, so it can also be used in flower beds in summer. The horticultural variety Discolor cv. Discolor has unclear silvery-white stripes and is copper-green.

温室で栽植されるツユクサ科の常緑多年草。ハカタカラクサとも呼ばれ，明治中ごろに渡来した。挿木繁殖が容易で，温室の棚下などでもよく育ち，生長も早く，夏のつり鉢物として人気があり，普及してきた。葉は長さ6～8cmの長卵形で，葉の表は紫褐色に銀白色の太い縞が2本入り，裏は濃紫紅色となる。日陰でもよく育つが強光にも耐えるので，夏は花壇にも利用できる。園芸品種のディスカラーcv.Discolorは銀白色の縞が不明りょうで銅緑色となる。
