A city on the east coast of Cebu Island, in the central Visayas, Philippines. The capital of Cebu Province. Located almost in the center of the Visayas, it has a good natural harbor protected by Mactan Island. It is a major commercial center and the second largest trading port after Manila. The goods handled are copra, Manila hemp, sugar, timber, and marine products, and the city is lined with warehouses for these products, as well as branches of trading companies and banks with headquarters in Manila. Industries include textiles, shoemaking, food processing, oil extraction, and woodworking. Due to the mountain ranges that loom, the city stretches along the coast, and an urban area including Mactan Island is being formed. There are many roads, a railway line runs along the east coast, and an international airport. It is the place where Magellan landed in 1521, and in 1565 M. Legazpi built the first Spanish town in the Philippines, which he used as a base for colonial conquest until he moved it to Manila in 1571. However, it later played an important role in rebellions against Spanish and American colonial rule. The influence of Spanish culture is still strong in the city, with the ruins of Fort San Pedro and the San Agustin Cathedral. It is the cultural center of Cebuano, a language used in the central Visayas, and has five universities, including the University of San Carlos (1595), the oldest in the Philippines. Population: 610,000 (estimated 1990). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
