Southwark
It is one of the 33 districts that make up Greater London in the southeast of England. It is a borough that belongs to Inner London, and is located south of the City of London across the River Thames. The district called Elephant Castle in the north is a junction of roads that enter London from the south, and occupies an important location near London Bridge. It is the oldest area in Greater London, and developed around a bridge that was built over the River Thames in Roman times. It is commonly known as The Borough, and has long been a popular place of relaxation for Londoners. There are many historical buildings, such as Guy's Hospital, the George Inn, and the Globe Theatre, where William Shakespeare's works were first performed. The area has also been the setting for novels by many authors, including Charles John Huffam Dickens. During World War II, the northern dock area was subjected to heavy bombing, and large-scale redevelopment was carried out afterwards. The southern part is mainly residential, and the northern part is commercial and industrial, with industries such as food, beer brewing, leather, printing, and machinery. The area is 29 km2 . Population: 244,866 (2001).
