1063‐1135 A Chinese Zen monk from the Song Dynasty. Born in Sichuan. His surname was Luo, given name Kokun, and his pen name was Wu Zhao. He was known as the Zen Master Butsuko. Engo was an imperial title bestowed upon him by Emperor Gaozong during his lifetime. He followed the teachings of the Wu Zu Fayan in Hubei and the Yangqi school of Zen from the Rinzai sect, and was active in Tokyo (Kaifeng), Nanjing, and Jiangxi. He was the devout follower of Zhang Shangying, Zhang Jun, and other high-ranking officials. He lectured on Xuedou Chongxian's "Song of the Ancient Hundred Rules" at the Lingquan Temple in Jia Shan in Hunan and other places, and his disciples recorded and compiled the lectures, which were later published under the title "Blue Rock Records," and became a classic of Zen literature.
