A masterpiece published by American author W. Irving under the pen name of the gentleman Geoffrey Crayon. Published in volumes from 1819 to 1820. Contains 34 short stories and sketches, including stories set in America such as "Rip Van Winkle," a Taro-esque tale about a man who falls asleep drinking with strange men he meets in the mountains, only to wake up and find that 20 years have passed when he returns home, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," "King Philip," which generously pours out sympathy for the Indians, "The Ghost Bridegroom," a European tale, and "Westminster Abbey," an impression of England.

アメリカの作家W.アービングが紳士ジェフリー･クレーヨンGeoffrey Crayonの筆名で発表した代表作。1819‐20年分冊出版。山中で出会ったふしぎな男たちの酒を飲んで眠りこみ，目覚めて家に帰ってみれば20年経っていたという浦島太郎風の《リップ･バン･ウィンクル》や《スリーピー･ホローの伝説》などアメリカを舞台にした物語，インディアンに同情を惜しみなく注ぐ《フィリップ王》，ヨーロッパの綺談《幽霊花婿》，イギリスの印象記《ウェストミンスター･アベー》など，短編，スケッチ34編を収録。
