Wang Mò (English spelling)

Japanese: 王黙 - おうもく（英語表記）Wáng Mò

A Chinese painter of the Tang dynasty. Dates of birth and death unknown. He was active from the late 8th century to the early 9th century, and was active mainly in the Jiangnan region. The Records of Famous Paintings of the Rekishi and the Lunar Records of Famous Paintings of the Tang Dynasty refer to him as Wang Mo, but they are the same person, and are thought to be the same Wang Xu mentioned in the Xuanhe Painting Collection. His manic paintings, which involve getting drunk, pouring ink, and using his hands and hair, marked an era in the development of Chinese ink painting, but no remains of his work remain. He is one of the painters who represents the unrestrained style of the Tang dynasty, known as the "excellent painting style."

中国，唐代の画家。生没年不明。8世紀後半から9世紀初頭が活躍期で，江南地方を中心に制作活動を行った。《歴代名画記》に王黙，《唐朝名画録》に王墨とあるが同一人で，《宣和画譜》がいう王洽（おうこう）のことと考えられる。酒に酔い，墨を潑（そそ）ぎ，手や頭髪を用いるなど，その狂躁的な作画は，中国の水墨画発展史上に一時代を画するものであったが，遺品は現存しない。逸品画風と呼ばれる唐代の粗放な様式を代表する画家の一人である。
