Livorno - Livorno (English spelling)

Livorno is the capital of the province of Livorno in Tuscany, central Italy. It has a population of 148,143 (2001 census estimate). It is a port city 15 km south of the mouth of the Arno River, facing the Ligurian Sea. It was originally a small fishing village, but it developed as a port for the Medici family, especially from the second half of the 16th century onwards, and developed significantly. The Santo Stefano Dock was built in 1908, and an industrial port was formed between 1924 and 1932, giving it a modern appearance. However, it suffered serious damage during World War II. There are large plants for thermal power generation, chemicals, shipbuilding, and oil refining, as well as machinery manufacturing, glass and ceramics production. An oil pipeline is laid between the city and Florence. It is also an important fishing port. There is a cathedral (built in the 16th century and rebuilt after World War II) and a naval academy founded in 1881. Its English name is Leghorn, and it is known as the place of origin and shipping port of the Leghorn breed of egg-laying chicken.
