In 1224 (Gennin 1), an internal conflict arose within the Hojo clan, the regents, over the struggle for real power in the Kamakura Shogunate. After the death of regent Hojo Yoshitoki in June of that year, Yoshitoki's second wife, the Iga clan (Iga no Kami Fujiwara no Tomomitsu), conspired with her brother, the shogunal regent Iga Mitsumune, to appoint her own son, Hojo Masamura, as regent and her son-in-law Fujiwara Sanemasa (son of Ichijo Yoshiyasu) as shogun, in an attempt to seize real power in the Shogunate. This led to conflict with Hojo Masako, who wanted Yoshitoki's eldest son Yasutoki to become regent. The Iga clan and others tried to realize their ambitions by gaining the support of Miura Yoshimura, the Shogunate's most powerful clan leader, but Masako got the initiative by appointing Yasutoki as regent at the end of June, and persuaded Yoshimura the following month, thus ending the Iga clan and others' ambitions.
