Known by its abbreviation GE, GE is the world's largest American general electric manufacturer. Its headquarters are in Fairfield, Connecticut. It was established in 1892 when Edison General Electric Co., which was established in 1890 by merging various Edison-affiliated companies, and Thomson-Houston Electric Co. merged. The former had pioneered the low-voltage DC high-resistance filament light bulb system, while the latter had pioneered the high-voltage AC arc lamp system, but the merger of the two companies prompted them to start developing high-voltage AC transmission and high-resistance filament light bulbs, and they also strengthened their research structure by inviting Steinmetz, a leading authority on AC theory, as an advisor.

略称のGEで知られる世界最大のアメリカの総合電機メーカー。本社コネティカット州フェアフィールド。1890年にエジソン系各社を合併して設立されたEdison General Electric Co.とThomson‐Houston Electric Co.とが92年に合併して創設された。それまでに前者は直流低圧高抵抗フィラメント電球方式を，後者は交流高圧アーク灯方式を開拓していたが，両社の合併を契機に交流高圧送電･高抵抗フィラメント電球の開発に着手するとともに，交流理論の大家スタインメッツを顧問に招き研究体制を強化した。
