Kagekiyo (puppet theatre)

...Although it is a narrative work, it can only be truly accomplished when it has a play with the essence of drama. In 1785, Chikamatsu Monzaemon wrote "Shusse Kagekiyo" to celebrate the start of his career as a gidayu performer. It deals with the serious conflict between the solitary hero Kagekiyo and Akoya, who betrays him because she loves him, and is a work that has the essence of early modern tragedy (see Hirosue Tamotsu's "Chikamatsu Josetsu"), making it a fitting starting point for gidayu-bushi. In 1703 (Genroku 16), the Chikamatsu-gidayu duo performed the first sewa-joruri play, "Sonezaki Shinju," further promoting the modernization of ningyo-joruri. ...
