Collection of economical items - Setsyoshu
(Also called "Setchoshu" in the Muromachi period) [1] A dictionary of characters and Japanese language from the mid-Muromachi period. It was compiled before the Bunmei era ( 1469-87 ). The editor is unknown, but there is a theory that it was a monk from Kennin-ji Temple. Characters are searched for by the initial letters of the words in alphabetical order and by semantic classification. When necessary, the meaning and origin of the characters are also mentioned. It spawned various manuscripts and woodblock prints, and the title of this book even came to be seen as a general term for similar books, and it was published until the early Showa period. Those published before the Keicho period are divided into three types: the Ise version, in which the first word in the "I" section of the Tenchimon gate begins with "Ise," the India version, which also begins with "India," and the Inui version, in which the first word in the Kenkonmon gate begins with "In. " The main books include the Kuromoto book ( copy ), the Tensho 18 book, the Manjuya book, and the Irin book (all woodblock prints), and the Ikyoshu and Wakan Tsuyoshu (all copies) with different titles. *Yoshikawa Family Documents Separate Collection - (year unknown) (Muromachi) February 27th, handwritten letter from Yoshikawa Motonaga: "Recently, I have been attending a six-day ceremony, so if you would like to play with the Setsuyoshu, I would like to congratulate you." *Ukiyo-zoshi, Saikaku Oridome (1694), vol. 1 : "The village headman has often asked me about difficult characters that he cannot find in the Setsuyoshu. " [2] Practical books of culture and collections of trivia. ※Fujin Bunko (1914) 3 “This book is the third volume of the Fujin Bunko Collection of Setsuyo, and contains ten volumes in seven parts, including a guide to women’s education, a guide to learning Japanese and Chinese calligraphy, a moral book with illustrated songs, a guide to makeup in the capital’s customs and customs, a comprehensive guide to our school’s Setsuyo cuisine, a quick guide to pickling in all seasons, and a guide to confectionery in Funabashi.” [Glossary] (1) The meaning of “Setsuyo” is said to mean “to be needed from time to time ” (Collected Words, Hashimoto Shinkichi), or to have come from the phrase “ Use setsuyo to love people ” in the Analects of Confucius – Learning (Nakata Norio), but is the latter theory more appropriate?
(2) In the early modern period, the style was that of a dry book, but from the 18th century onwards, supplements and illustrations in the style of a complete collection of knowledge began to be included, reaching their peak in the 19th century. In modern times, the style of (2) came to be used more often, and complete collections of knowledge without a dictionary section came to be called "setsuyo (shu)."
(3) In the latter half of the 18th century, the Iroha double lookup and the lookup by the presence or absence of special kana (voiced consonants, glottal stops, and drawn consonants) were invented, but the Iroha and kana number lookup quick lookup setsubunshu came to dominate the others. However, from the mid-Meiji period, as small-format modern Japanese dictionaries were published, they were eliminated.
