A city in northern Osaka Prefecture, on the north bank of the downstream Yodo River. In 1966, Mishima Town, Mishima County, was incorporated as a city and renamed. Formerly a rice paddy area, in recent years the development of road transport networks has seen the establishment of chemical, metal, machinery and equipment factories, as well as a dramatic increase in housing, resulting in urbanization. The Tokaido Main Line, Hankyu Kyoto Line, and Kinki Expressway run through the city, and it is home to the Tokaido Shinkansen Torikai Depot and many transport and warehousing companies.
