Japanese: デゲネリア（英語表記）Degeneria vitiensis I.W.Bailey et A.C.Smith

A single genus and species of the Degeneriaceae family found only on the Fiji Islands in the South Pacific (illustration). An evergreen tree that can reach 30m in height. It has numerous petals and stamens, with petal-like pseudostamens inside, each arranged in a spiral. In angiosperms, the stamens generally have anthers at the end of long, slender filaments, but in Degeneria, the anthers are embedded in flat, petal-like filaments, and the shape of this stamen is thought to be extremely primitive. The carpel is very similar to that of the Illicaceae family, but there is only one.

南太平洋のフィジー諸島にのみ分布する，1属1種のデゲネリア科の植物（イラスト）。常緑高木で30mに達する。多数の花弁･おしべがあり，その内側に花弁そっくりの仮雄蕊（かゆうずい）があり，おのおのらせん配列している。被子植物のおしべは一般に細長い花糸の先に葯がつくが，デゲネリアでは花弁状の平らな花糸に葯が埋もれており，このおしべの形態はきわめて原始的と考えられている。心皮はシキミモドキ科によく似ているが，1個しかない。
