A breed of dog. Height at the shoulder is 61-68.5 cm. Native to England, Ireland, and Scotland. It is a good swimmer and is mainly used for waterfowl hunting. When it finds prey, it will lie down on its stomach to let the prey know (set), hence the name. The English Setter is said to have descended from the Spaniel and Spanish Pointer, and is covered in long, silky fur. Coat colors include black, white and tan, black and white, and white. Other breeds include the Gordon Setter, which has a heavier feel than its predecessor, and the Irish Setter, which has reddish-brown fur.

イヌの品種。肩高61〜68.5cm。イギリス，アイルランド，スコットランド原産。泳ぎがうまく，主として水鳥猟に用いられる。獲物をみつけると，腹ばいになって知らせる（set）ためこの名がある。イングリッシュ・セッターはスパニエルとスパニッシュ・ポインターから出たといわれ，絹糸状の長い被毛におおわれる。毛色は黒，白と黄褐色，黒と白，白など。ほかに前種より重厚な感じのゴードン・セッター，赤みを帯びた金くり色の被毛をもつアイリッシュ・セッターがある。
