Art House

...Currently, there is only one in Tokyo. The name "Art Theatre Guild" was coined by Mori Iwao, and there is no organization with that name in the United States or the United Kingdom. However, in the United States, small cinemas called "art houses" have been established in university towns, New York and other large cities since the early 1950s to cater to new audiences who want non-Hollywood films, i.e., art films, or European films, and continue to show Italian neorealism, British Balcon-style comedies, and films by directors such as Jean Renoir and Ingmar Bergman. In the 1920s, an American avant-garde film theater that showed German Expressionist and Russian avant-garde works was once called the Filmart Theatre, and the English word "art theatre" refers more to artistic and avant-garde "theatre" and the theater itself.
