Xue Xuan - Seminar

A Neo-Confucian scholar from the early Ming Dynasty in China. A native of Shanxi Province. His pen name was Jingxuan. At the time when talent was scarce in the early Ming Dynasty, he studied Neo-Confucianism extensively and brought vitality back to the intellectual world. However, he was not blessed with as many outstanding disciples as Wu Youbi. The content of his thought did not go one step beyond the framework of Neo-Confucianism. He is a typical example of a later Neo-Confucian scholar who believed in and practiced Neo-Confucianism. His main works include "Records of Reading" and "Continued Records of Reading." These are invaluable records for learning about everyday ethics in general, not just about theories of mind and character and qi. He was reevaluated during the reevaluation of Neo-Confucianism at the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, and was widely read in Japan during the Edo period.

中国、明(みん)代初期の朱子学者。山西省の人。号は敬軒。人材の払底した明代初期に、よく朱子学を修めて思想界に活気を呼び戻した。しかし、呉与弼(ごよひつ)の門ほどには傑出した弟子に恵まれなかった。思想内容は朱子学の枠を一歩も出ない。朱子学を信奉して実践した朱子後学の一典型である。主著には『読書録』『読書続録』がある。これらは心性・理気論に限らず広く日常的倫理観を知るに貴重な記録である。明末清(しん)初の朱子学再評価のおりに見直され、日本では江戸時代によく読まれた。
