Noshiro [city] - Noshiro

Japanese: 能代[市] - のしろ
Noshiro [city] - Noshiro
A city in northwestern Akita Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1940. It occupies most of the Noshiro Plain facing the Sea of Japan, and its central town is located near the mouth of the Yoneshiro River, through which the Gono Line passes. The city has also developed in front of Higashi-Noshiro Station, where the Ou Main Line and Gono Line branch off. During the Edo period, it was a river port for transporting lumber and other goods to Matsumae, Osaka, and other areas. It is one of Japan's leading lumber cities, with forests of Akita cedar, and the lumber and wood product industries are active. After World War II, imported lumber became the main source of trade, but even today (2003), lumber, wood products, furniture, and pulp industries account for about 40% of the value of manufactured goods shipped. The pulp and paper industries are also active, and Noshiro Shunkei lacquerware is a specialty. The city suffered two major fires after World War II, but fire-resistant urban development is underway. The coast is a sand dune area, and vegetables such as pears, myoga, and green onions are cultivated vigorously. In March 2006, the town of Futai in Yamamoto County was incorporated. Area: 426.95 km2 . Population: 59,084 (2010).
