The conflict between the Tutsi and Hutu intensified around the time of independence, with successive changes of prime ministers and assassinations. In July 1966, 19-year-old Crown Prince Charles Ndizeye deposed King Mwambutsa, who was recuperating abroad, and ascended to the throne himself as Ntale V, appointing Colonel Michel Micombero (1940-1983) as prime minister. However, in November of the same year, Micombero deposed the new king, proclaimed a republic, became president himself, and made UPRONA the only political party.
