Wang Shifu - King Jippoo

Date of birth and death unknown. A Chinese Yuan dynasty dramatist. His name was Dexin. His detailed career is unknown, but he was active in Dadu (Beijing) alongside Guan Hanqing and Ma Zhiyuan in the late 13th century, when Yuan zaju (a type of opera) first flourished in the north. He is known for over a dozen works, but he is best known for his masterpiece, "Records of the Western Xiang," which was praised as the "best in the world," and is considered one of the leading Yuan opera writers. His elegant lyrics, which combine colloquial speech with a moderate amount of elegant language, have been likened to "beauties among flowers," and the beautiful lines in "Records of the Western Xiang" are loved and hummed by people.

生没年不詳。中国、元(げん)代の戯曲作家。名は徳信(とくしん)。詳しい経歴はわからないが、13世紀後半、元雑劇(げんざつげき)が初め北方で隆盛を迎えた時期に、関漢卿(かんかんけい)、馬致遠(ばちえん)らと並んで大都(だいと)（北京(ペキン)）で活躍した。十数種の作品が知られるが、なによりもまず「天下第一」の評をかちえた名作『西廂記(せいそうき)』の作者として声名が高く、元曲(げんきょく)の代表作家の一人にあげられる。口語に雅言をほどよく交えた風韻豊かな曲詞は「花間の美人」に例えられ、『西廂記』中の佳句は人々の好んで口ずさむところとなっている。
