Segovia

Japanese: セゴビア
Segovia
A Spanish guitarist. He revived the classical guitar, which had been content with salon instruments since the mid-19th century, and greatly expanded its expressive power. His achievements, which followed the aspirations of Sor and Tarrega, are likened to those of Casals on the cello. Born in Linares in northeastern Andalusia, he taught himself to play the guitar. He made his debut at the age of 15 and traveled around Spain and South America. He established his reputation with a recital in Paris in 1924, and made his debut in New York in 1928. Since then, he has discovered many classical pieces and arranged works by JS Bach and others for the guitar, expanding his repertoire. He also commissioned works from composers of his time, and was a key figure in the rise of guitar music. His requests led to the creation of famous pieces by Turina of Spain, Castelnuovo Tedesco of Italy, Ponce of Mexico, and Villa-Lobos of Brazil, and Rodrigo dedicated his work Fantasia for guitar and orchestra (1954) to him. He has visited Japan four times since 1929, and has given dignified and excellent performances. →Yepes/Guitar/Falla→Related Articles Rodrigo
