The fifth Sultan of the Mamluk dynasty. Reigned 1260-77. A Turk of Kipchak origin, he was captured by the Mongol army and sold to Syria. He then became a Mamluk (slave soldier) under the Ayyubid sultan Saleh, and rose to prominence after capturing Louis IX at the Battle of Mansurah in 1250. After defeating the Mongol army at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, he killed the Mamluk sultan Qutuz and became sultan himself. After establishing the Abbasid caliphate, he officially recognized the four Sunni schools of law and established the Balid network, establishing the foundation of the Mamluk state.

マムルーク朝の第5代スルタン。在位1260‐77年。キプチャク生れのトルコ人で，モンゴル軍の捕虜となってシリアへ売られ，次いでアイユーブ朝のスルタン，サーリフのマムルーク(奴隷軍人)となり，1250年マンスーラの戦でルイ9世を捕虜にしてから頭角を現した。60年にアイン･ジャールートの戦でモンゴル軍を撃退した後，マムルーク朝スルタン，クトゥズを殺して自らスルタンとなり，アッバース朝カリフの擁立に続いてスンナ派四法学派を公認，さらにバリード網を整備してマムルーク朝国家の基礎を確立した。
