1228-77 The fifth Sultan of the Mamluk dynasty. Reigned 1260-77. A Turk of Kipchak origin, he was captured by the Mongol army and sold to Syria. He then became a Mamluk (slave soldier) under the Ayyubid sultan Saleh, and rose to prominence after capturing Louis IX at the Battle of Mansurah in 1250. After defeating the Mongol army at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, he killed the Mamluk sultan Qutuz and became sultan himself.
