1900‐74 President of Colombia. In office from 1953 to 1957. As Commander-in-Chief of the Army, he overthrew the Gomez regime in a coup in June 1953, and implemented populist policies under the banner of Christianity and Bolivarianism. However, he was unable to implement these policies and the country fell into dictatorship and corruption, leading to his exile in 1957 under pressure from the Liberal Party, Conservative Party, and the military. In the 1960s, he formed the National Popular Alliance (ANAPO) based on the masses of workers, and ran in the 1970 presidential election, but was narrowly defeated.
