Mumbai

...The population of Greater Bombay as a metropolitan area is 9,926,000 (1991). The name comes from the Portuguese Bom Bahia (meaning "good bay"), but in 1995 it was renamed Mumbai (after the incarnation of the goddess Parvati, Mumba, worshipped by the native Koli fishermen). The city has a large bay that is now the port of Mumbai, a large coastal plain immediately below the Western Ghats that surrounds it, and is connected to the Deccan Plateau and northern India by a road that passes through the saddle behind the mountain range.
