The general formula is M I x WO 3 . It is one of the so-called non-stoichiometric compounds in which alkali metal and other metal atoms are inserted into tungsten oxide in a non-stoichiometric ratio, and is so named because it has a bronze-like luster similar to metal, exhibits weak paramagnetism, and is also electrically conductive. M I = Na, K, etc. are typical, and many others such as Cu and Ag are also known. Na x WO 3 ( x < 1) can be obtained by mixing Na 2 WO 4 , W, and WO 3 thoroughly and igniting in a vacuum or in an inert gas (950°C), or by melting a mixture of WO 3 and Na 2 CO 3 and electrolyzing it.
