Born: November 23, 1890. [Died] August 12, 1974. A scholar of Russian literature. His real name was Chozaburo. He graduated from the Department of Russian Literature at the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages in 1912. He got a job at the Railway Bureau, but continued to dedicate himself to the study of Russian literature, and in 1915, he published a translation of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment through Shinchosha. This was his first translation from the original Russian. He continued to translate works of Russian literature, completing works such as The Complete Works of Chekhov and The Complete Works of Tolstoy. In 1967, he received an order from the Soviet Union for his many years of work in translating and introducing Russian literature. His book, My Eighty Years of Living So Far (1971), is a unique autobiography of a translator. In 1973, he received the Japan Art Academy Prize.
