Nakamura Hakuyo

A scholar of Russian literature. His real name was Chozaburo. He graduated from the Department of Russian Literature at the Tokyo School of Foreign Languages in 1912. He got a job at the Railway Bureau, but continued to dedicate himself to the study of Russian literature, and in 1915, he published a translation of Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment through Shinchosha. This was his first translation from the original Russian. He continued to translate works of Russian literature, completing works such as The Complete Works of Chekhov and The Complete Works of Tolstoy. In 1967, he received an order from the Soviet Union for his many years of work in translating and introducing Russian literature. His book, My Eighty Years of Living So Far (1971), is a unique autobiography of a translator. In 1973, he received the Japan Art Academy Prize.

ロシア文学者。本名，長三郎。 1912年東京外国語学校露文科卒業。鉄道院に就職したが，一貫してロシア文学の研究に専心，15年新潮社からドストエフスキーの『罪と罰』の翻訳を出版した。これはロシア語原書からの初めての訳であった。その後も次々とロシア文学の翻訳を手がけ，『チェーホフ全集』『トルストイ全集』などを完成した。 67年，多年にわたるロシア文学の翻訳，紹介の功績でソ連から勲章を受けた。著書『ここまで生きてきて　私の八十年』 (1971) は一翻訳家のユニークな自叙伝である。 73年芸術院賞受賞。
