Adachi Choka

Japanese:
Adachi Choka

Founder and head of the Adachi style of ikebana. Born in a temple in Hiroshima Prefecture, he studied ikebana from an early age, and by the age of 18, his floral skills and talent had already become so outstanding that he was recognized by the head of the Ikenobo School of Rokkakudo in Kyoto. However, he was not satisfied with the Ikenobo style of ikebana, which was bound by customs and traditions at the time, and in order to meet the demands of the new era, he invented the Adachi style of decorative flowers (Seika) and founded a school in 1917 (Taisho 6). The flower style, which made use of the decorativeness of Western flowers, was well received, and combined with the rationalization of flower style standards and teaching methods, it showed remarkable development in the world of ikebana during the Taisho period. After World War II, he disliked avant-garde ikebana and advocated a more traditional ikebana movement, but his power as it had been in the past was not shown in the end. The Adachi style of ikebana was later taken over by Touko (1936-2006), Touko's daughter, in the Adachi style of flower art.
