Also written as "dofuku," it is said to have originally been clothing worn on the road or worn by practitioners of Buddhism. It is believed to have evolved from the straight-stitched robes of monks and was used as casual clothing for nobles, but from around the Muromachi period it began to be worn by samurai as well, worn over short sleeves, and its shape gradually became closer to that of later haori.
