In its specific sense, it refers to the colonial legislation of the Spanish Americas, formerly known as the Indies, but in a broader sense, it refers to the entire body of legislation in the region during the colonial period. In the latter sense, the source of the Law of the Indies is mainly Castilian law and legislation for the colonies issued from the mother country. At the time of the discovery of the New World, a political union of the two kingdoms of Castile and Aragon had been formed in Spain, but the newly discovered and conquered continent and islands were subsequently to belong to Castile, for a number of reasons and considerations.
