A stone or wooden altar that protrudes from the wall of a building. A statue, a small altar, or a plaque is often placed in the central recess, and columns are arranged on the left and right sides, and eaves and gables are arranged at the top, resembling the facade of a temple. This style was perfected in ancient Rome and was widely used as a method of solemn and elegant architectural decoration. The original Latin word for "small temple" (the correct word is aedicula) was a Latin word, but the meaning of the word spread over time, and in the early Middle Ages it was used to refer to a chapel, and in the Renaissance and Baroque periods it was used to refer to a type of framework surrounding a window or door, or a canopy covering an altar in a church.
