A weapon that uses infrared rays to detect, identify, track, and communicate with targets. Broadly speaking, there are active methods that use artificial infrared sources, and passive methods that use infrared rays naturally emitted by the target itself. Currently, the latter are mainly used, and infrared rays with wavelengths of 3 to 5 μm and 8 to 14 μm, which have good atmospheric penetration, are used. The high temperature of the exhaust port of an aircraft engine acts as a powerful source of infrared rays, so missiles that can detect and guide them were developed in various countries in the mid-1950s.
