It is an artiodactyl, Hippopotamidae. It is said to reach a body length of 4.6m, a height of 1.5m, and a weight of 4t. Its body is almost completely naked, with short bristles scattered all over. Its body color is reddish brown or dark brown, with a pinkish underside. Its head is large, and even when submerged, only its ears, eyes, and nostrils can be above the water. It may secrete a red liquid from its skin on land. It is nocturnal, and lives in grasslands near water, feeding mainly on grass. Its gestation period is 230-240 days. It gives birth to one calf weighing 3-5kg per birth. The calf drinks milk underwater. It once inhabited the Nile River, but is now found only in sub-Saharan Africa. The current Hippopotamidae family includes only two species, this one and the pygmy hippopotamus.

偶蹄目カバ科。体長 4.6m，体高 1.5m，体重 4tになるといわれる。体はほとんど裸出しており，短い剛毛が散生する。体色は赤褐色ないし暗褐色で，体下面は桃色を帯びる。頭部は大きく，体が水中に没しても，耳，眼，鼻孔だけを水面に出すことができるようになっている。陸上で皮膚から赤色の分泌液を出すことがある。夜行性で，水辺の草地で草を主食として生活する。妊娠期間は 230～240日。1産1子で，3～5kgの子を産む。子は水中で乳を飲む。かつてはナイル川にも生息したが，現在はサハラ砂漠以南のアフリカにのみ分布する。なお，現生のカバ科 Hippopotamidaeには，本種とコビトカバの2種が含まれるのみである。
