A long epic poem from the Six Dynasties period in China. "Yutai Xinyong" is titled "Composed for the Wife of Jiao Zhongqing" and "Gafu Shishu" is titled "The Wife of Jiao Zhongqing", but it is often called "The Peacock Flying Southeast" because of the first line, which begins with "The peacock flies southeast, wandering five miles once," which is an analogy for the couple's inability to separate. It is a five-line poem of over 1,700 characters. According to the preface, it took place during the Jian'an period (196-220) at the end of the Eastern Han dynasty. Liu Lanzhi, who married Jiao Zhongqing, was ostracized by her mother-in-law soon after the wedding and was forced to return to her parents' home, where her brother forced her to remarry. The couple, whose living tree had been split, vow to die, Liu Lanzhi drowns himself, and Jiao Zhongqing hangs himself. The dramatic structure of the setting and dialogue between the characters is distinctive, making this an important work of folk songs from the Six Dynasties.
