An archipelago located in the South Pacific Ocean between 8 and 23 degrees south latitude and 156 and 167 degrees west longitude, and part of New Zealand. Total land area 240 km2. Population 19,000 (1994). Divided into the northern archipelago consisting of six atolls, including Manihiki and Rakahanga, and the southern archipelago consisting of seven volcanic islands, including Rarotonga and Mangaia, and two atolls, 90% of the population lives in the southern archipelago. The islanders are Polynesian, and are similar to the Maori people of New Zealand in both physical characteristics and language. The northern archipelago produces copra, while the southern archipelago produces bananas, citrus fruits, pineapples, etc., which are exported to New Zealand. 南緯8~23゜,西経156~167゜の南太平洋上に位置するニュージーランド領の諸島。陸地総面積240km2。人口1万9000(1994)。マニヒキ,ラカハンガなど6個の環礁からなる北部群島と,ラロトンガ,マンガイアなど7個の火山島および2個の環礁とからなる南部群島とに分かれ,人口の9割は南部群島に住む。島民はポリネシア人で,身体形質,言語ともにニュージーランドのマオリ族に近い。北部群島ではコプラ,南部群島ではバナナ,かんきつ類,パイナップルなどを産し,ニュージーランドに輸出する。
