Circle of Youth

A full-length novel by Noma Hiroshi. Since the opening was published in the magazine Kindai Bungaku in 1947 (Showa 22), this six-part epic, five-volume work was completed in 1971, 24 years later. It won the Tanizaki Junichiro Prize and the Lotus Prize from the Asian and African Writers' Conference. Set in Osaka in 1939, the story unfolds as three characters intertwine: Yabana Masayuki, a city hall official working in the reconciliation project for discriminated burakumin; his mother Yabana Yoshie, a follower of folk Buddhism who runs a play guide in Sennichimae; and Daido Izumi, a son of the emerging bourgeoisie who dropped out of the Marxist movement and wanders the nightlife. This is a representative work of "holistic novel" that tackles and attempts to grasp a variety of issues, including discrimination, war, sex, family, religion, life and death, and the individual and the whole. It is an unprecedented epic work in Japanese literature, and the world of the novel is unprecedented.

野間宏(ひろし)の長編小説。1947年（昭和22）雑誌『近代文学』に冒頭が発表されて以来、24年間を経て71年に完結した六部作、全五巻の大作。谷崎潤一郎賞、アジア・アフリカ作家会議によるロータス賞を受賞。1939年の大阪を舞台に被差別部落への融和事業に従事する市役所吏員矢花正行(やばなまさゆき)、千日前にプレイガイドを経営し、土俗仏教の信徒である母矢花よし江、そして新興ブルジョアの子弟でマルクス主義運動から脱落し夜の世界を徘徊(はいかい)する大道出泉(だいどういずみ)の3人がそれぞれ交錯し、物語を展開する。差別、戦争、性、家、宗教、生と死、個と全体など多様な問題と取り組み、それを把握しようとした「全体小説」の代表作。日本文学に異例の大巨編であり、その小説世界も前人未踏のものがある。
