…In 1216, the Teutonic Knights established their residence here, and the nickname "German Cape" (Deutsche Ecke) was born, inspired by the area's topography. Successive electors preferred to stay in the castle in the city and in Ehrenbreitstein Castle (later a Prussian fortress) on the opposite bank. In the second half of the 15th century, the electoral court (a summer palace) was established here, and a classical-style palace (currently the government building) was built in 1777-86. The city was damaged in the Thirty Years' War and the War of the Palatinate Succession, and during the French Revolution it became a base for the counter-revolutionary movement of exiled aristocrats, and was occupied by Napoleon's troops. …
