There are many examples around the world of people believing in the sacred powers residing in mother-child statues and using them as objects of religious rites. A typical motif is that of a mother breastfeeding her baby. This motif can be found not only in the ancient Orient and ancient India, but also on pre-Colombian pottery in Central and South America, and in sculptures by West African peoples such as the Yoruba and Ashanti. Another important motif is the mother embracing her dead child. A typical example is the Pieta, a statue of the Virgin Mary embracing the dead Christ.
