This clan ruled over Kiyosue Village, Toyoura County, Nagato Province (Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) and 13 other villages. Its first leader was Mototomo, the second son of Mori Hidemoto, the first leader of the Chofu clan, and was established in 1653 (Shoo 2) with the allocation of 10,000 koku of land in accordance with Hidemoto's will. From the perspective of the Choshu clan, it was a sub-family of the Choshu clan, but along with the Chofu clan and Tokuyama clan, it formed one of the three sub-family families. During the time of the second leader, Genpei, Genpei succeeded the head family due to the extinction of the Chofu clan's family status, and the Kiyosue clan was temporarily abolished, but then under the third leader, Masanari, it was re-established in 1729 (Kyoho 14). In the Meiji era, it became Kiyosue Prefecture, and was then incorporated into Yamaguchi Prefecture.
