It is an annelid of the Polychaeta family Nereidae that grows to the size of a small snake and is named after the way it twists its body during reproductive season, which is similar to that of a snake. It is a northern species that inhabits the area from Hokkaido to the Tohoku region of Japan, and is also found in the Sea of ​​Okhotsk, the Bering Sea, Iceland, Norway, and other places. It has a body length of 90 cm, a body width including the peduncle of 4.5 cm, and 240 to 270 setae. However, most are around 15 to 40 cm in size. The back is shiny blue, and the peduncle is yellow.

多毛綱ゴカイ科の環形動物で,小型のヘビくらいの大きさになり,また生殖時期に体をくねらせながら泳ぐようすもヘビに似ているところからこの名がある。北方種で,日本では北海道から東北地方に生息しており,オホーツク海,ベーリング海,アイスランド,ノルウェーなどにも分布している。体長90cm,いぼ足を含んだ体幅4.5cm,240~270剛毛節になる。しかし,ふつうは15~40cmくらいが多い。背面は光沢のある青色で,いぼ足は黄色。
