The washing of the body before the deceased is placed in a coffin. In the past, close relatives would wash the body naked or wearing only a rope sash or cord, in a basin of hot water. The water is poured upside down into a basin, called "sakasamizu." When drawing water for the kasane, it is done with a ladle, called "sakasami-hishaku," which is scooped downstream. The used water is discarded in a place out of the sun, such as under the eaves. Nowadays it has been simplified, and the body is lightly wiped with a wet towel or with alcohol. This is a confusion between the practice of cleaning the body and the Buddhist ablution ritual, but it is one of the rites of passage in a person's life, marking a transition to the next stage.
