Scientology (English spelling)

Japanese: サイエントロジー（英語表記）Scientology

A religious movement that was proposed by American author Lafayette R. Hubbard in the 1950s and has spread internationally. It is based in Clearwater, Florida. In his book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health (1950), Hubbard analyzed human mental disorders and presented his own unique treatment method, Dianetics, to overcome them. He later moved away from Dianetics and called his religious approach to the human condition Scientology, and founded the Church of Scientology in 1954. Missionary work in Japan began in earnest in the mid-1980s.

1950年代にアメリカ合衆国の作家ラファイエット・R.ハバードが提唱し，国際的に広がった宗教運動。本拠はフロリダ州クリアウォーター。ハバードは著書『ダイアネティックス心の健康のための現代科学』The Modern Science of Mental Health（1950）で，人間の精神異常を分析し，それらを克服する独自の治療法ダイアネティックスを提示した。その後ダイアネティックスから離れ，人間のありようについて試みた宗教的アプローチをサイエントロジーと称し，1954年サイエントロジー教会を設立した。日本への布教は 1980年代半ばに本格的に始まった。
