The name of the city comes from the name of a fishing village, Madrasahpatnam, acquired by the British from the local lord in 1639, but in 1996 it was renamed Chennai, the Tamil name. To the south of the city is San Thomé, which has been one of the Portuguese bases in India since the mid-16th century (it is said that Thomas, one of Jesus' twelve disciples, came to India to preach the gospel and was buried here after his martyrdom), but the direct origin of the current city dates back to 1639.
