Iron and steel manufacturing

Japanese: 製鉄・製鋼 - せいてつせいこう
Iron and steel manufacturing
The process of making steel from iron ore is called ironmaking or pig iron production, while the process of making steel from pig iron is called steelmaking. For an example of the process of an integrated steelworks, which includes pig iron production, steelmaking, and further steel material and product manufacturing, see the diagram in the "Steelworks" entry.
[Principle of the smelting process]
Steel is used in a wide range of fields, including construction, ships, vehicles, industrial machinery, electrical equipment, office equipment, and household goods, and is a major pillar of modern society. The consumption of steel is incomparably greater than that of any other metal (total world crude steel production in 1994 was 723 million tons).
