Somatometry

Japanese: 生体計測 - せいたいけいそく（英語表記）somatometry

This is a method used to objectively express the physical characteristics of individuals or groups by measuring and accurately quantifying the shape and size of the whole human body or each part of the human body, and is also called anthropometry. The measurements obtained include quantities that represent the whole body (height, weight, etc.), quantities that represent the major axis of the body (height, sitting height, torso length, limb length, etc.), width (shoulder width, waist width, etc.), circumference (head circumference, chest circumference, waist circumference, upper arm circumference, etc.), etc., but the ratios (indexes, readings) between each measurement are also used to represent physical characteristics.

人体全体の，あるいは人体各部の形や大きさを測り，正確に数量化することによって，個体や集団の身体の特徴を客観的に表現するために用いられる方法のことで，身体計測ともいわれる。得られる計測値としては，身体の全体を表す量(身長･体重など)，身体の長径を表す量(身長･座高･胴長･四肢長など)，同じく幅径(肩幅･腰幅など)，囲径(頭囲･胸囲･腰囲･上腕囲など)などがあるが，各計測値間の比率(指数･示数)も身体の特徴を表すものとして用いられている。
