Movietone

Fox started out in 1906 as the operator of the nickelodeon, America's first permanent movie theater, and gradually expanded its cinema network, mainly in New York. In the 1910s, the company began production and distribution, promoting the glamorous star Theda Bara (1890-1955), known as the first vamp actress. In the 1920s, the company grew to become the largest movie company in Hollywood along with Adolph Zukor's Paramount and Marcus Roe's MGM. Fox developed a sound-on-film process called Movietone, which was a pioneer in the practical application of talkies, rivaling Warner Brothers' Vitaphone. However, it was defeated by financial capital over talkie patents, and its business slumped during the economic depression of 1929. Rockefeller's Chase National Bank bought out most of the company's stock, and the company merged with 20th Century Pictures in 1935. The color of 20th Century Fox Pictures was created by the powerful and individualistic Spyros Skouras (1893-1971), who served as president from 1942 to 1962 and was said to have been dictatorial in his control of all production, and Darryl F. Zanuck, who served as head of production from 1935 to 1956 and succeeded Skouras as president in 1962.
