It is the largest city on Jeju Island, located in the northern part of the southernmost part of South Korea (Republic of Korea). It is the capital of Jeju Province. It has an area of 253.89 square kilometers and a population of 278,500 (estimated in 2001). It has Jeju Port, which has been the gateway to Jeju Island since ancient times, and regular ferries operate between Mokpo, Busan, Chujado, and Wando. It is important not only as a trading port but also as a fishing port, and the city stretches in a strip along the coast, with a growing population. An international airport has also been opened, and direct flights are available from major cities in Japan as well as from Japan (Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka).
