Vocal cord nodules are small nodule-like protuberances that often occur bilaterally in the front third of the vocal cords, where vibration is greatest during speech. They are also known as poet's nodes or singer's nodes, and are often found in people whose jobs require excessive use of the voice. The color of the surface is often almost the same as that of the surrounding normal mucosa, and they can usually be distinguished from vocal cord polyps by the naked eye. They are also found in infants or school children who overuse their voice, and are sometimes referred to collectively as school-age hoarseness or childhood nodules.
