A warrior of the Mutsu Province in the Middle Ages. In 1190, Izawa Iekage was appointed as the Rusushiki (chief retainer) of Mutsu Province, and from then on the position was passed down for generations and the family was called the Rusu clan. The Rusushiki was the practice of carrying out state affairs from the Rusushiki (chief retainer) residence at Taga Castle (currently Tagajo City, Miyagi Prefecture), the capital of Mutsu. They held this position until the late Kamakura period, and their power weakened when they sided with Ashikaga Tadayoshi during the Kanno Disturbance, but later regained it. After the Muromachi period, they made Iwakiri Castle (currently Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture) their castle and formed a marriage relationship with the Date clan, so that the head of the Rusu clan was successively a member of the Date family, starting with Date Kunimune in the 15th century. In the early modern period, they were ranked as vassals of the Date clan and entered Mizusawa Castle (present Mizusawa Ward, Oshu City, Iwate Prefecture) in 1629. Initially, they received a fief of 1,000 kan (10,000 koku), which later increased to over 1633 kan. 中世の陸奥国の武士。1190年伊沢家景(いざわいえかげ)が陸奥国留守職(るすしき)に任命され，以後留守職を代々世襲し，留守氏を称した。留守職とは，陸奥国府多賀(たが)城（現宮城県多賀城市）の留守所(るすどころ)にあって国務を行うことをいう。鎌倉後期までその職権を務め，観応の擾乱(かんのうのじょうらん)の際に足利直義(ただよし)方についたため勢力を弱めたが，のち再興。室町期以後，岩切(いわきり)城（現宮城県仙台市）を居城とし，伊達氏と婚姻関係を結んだため，15世紀の伊達邦宗(くにむね)をはじめとして，留守氏の当主に相次いで伊達氏が入っている。近世には伊達氏の家臣として一門の家格に列し，1629年水沢城（現岩手県奥州市水沢区）に入り，当初の知行(ちぎょう)高は1000貫（１万石）で，のち1633貫余となる。なお《余目氏旧記(あまるめしきゅうき)》は《留守家旧記》ともいわれ，《留守家文書》とともに留守氏の歴史と平安末期から戦国期にわたる陸奥国の動きを知るうえで貴重な史料。→在庁官人
